Changing How You Think

Many of us constantly put pressure on ourselves to do better and accept nothing less than perfection. And while changing the way you think and how you speak to and about yourself may sound like an impossible task, there are small steps you can take:

  • Make lists – Start by jotting down your “should statements” anytime you catch yourself making one. Then think of a more positive way to say that statement. Replacing your shoulds, oughts, and musts with more realistic and positive thoughts and ideas. For example:
    — Instead of saying, “I really should be doing more at work if I want to get ahead,” say something along the lines of, “Every time I work hard, my coworkers look up to me and my boss congratulates me on a job well done.”
    — Instead of saying, “I should exercise more often,” try saying, “Whenever I exercise, I feel more energetic and it feels great to see the pounds dropping.”
    — Sometimes I say, “It would be preferable if I chose a piece of fruit and some cheese instead of that donut.” That way, I’m not saying to myself that I’m bad. I’m simply offering myself an alternative for the future.
  • Cut yourself some slack – Nobody’s perfect and we all make mistakes, forget things, and have accidents. Being compassionate and understanding with yourself and praising the things you have done well instead of what you haven’t can change your mood and mindset quicker than you think. A favorite of mine is remembering that we’re doing the best we can with what we’ve got. 
  • Surround yourself with positive people – Sometimes the way we talk to ourselves is a direct reflection of how others talk to us. People who always point out your shortcomings can lead you to have those “should” thoughts in the first place. Life’s too short to be around negative individuals.
  • Talk to a professional – Trying to change the way you speak or think about yourself can be tough without professional help. Speaking with our licensed therapists and psychologists in Tampa can be the first step in feeling and thinking better.
  • Consider picking up books like Martin Seligman’s Learned Optimism: How to Change Your Mind and Your Life or David Burns’ The Feeling Good Handbook. Both of these will show you how to notice and tweak your thinking so that it’s helpful rather than harmful.

The way that we think can either be beneficial on our daily walk or it can become an extreme hindrance. Not only will it hinder how we live our lives, but it will also alter our mental attitude. Positive thinking and mindset has many benefits including increased confidence, lower stress levels, better coping skills, improved outlook, etc. 

It might be surprising to some, but studies have shown that positive thinking helps heart patients. The mind/body connection is extremely strong. Your thoughts can affect any physical pain that you have in your life. Some people get severe panic attacks and blood pressure spikes that is initiated solely by their thoughts.

Thus the cycle, you think ->  you feel -> you do.

The way that we think will affect how we react to bad news and disappointments. In trials our thinking can lead to depression or it can lead to us joyfully praising the Lord. We have to make a practice of renewing our minds.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, plays an important role in soothing and helping to restore the skin barrier. Niacinamide and the skin’s barrier was first studied in 1976, and it has since become popular cosmetic ingredient in skincare formulations for acne, eczema, rosacea and skin discoloration.

Niacinamide is a multi-tasking vitamin, and when used topically, it may help alleviate skin sensitivities, builds healthy skin cells, and help skin retain moisture. Niacinamide is a water-soluble form of vitamin B3 that’s used in dermatology for everything from helping to prevent skin cancer to decreasing redness associated with inflammatory conditions like rosacea and acne.

Niacinamide can play a pivotal role in strengthening the skin barrier. It “reduces water loss from the epidermis and increases lipids (also known as ceramides) and proteins found in the skin barrier layer. Using a niacinamide serum or cream could increase your skin’s ability to defend itself from pollution particles and irritants.

But, perhaps more interesting is the way that regular use of niacinamide skincare can lead to balanced sebum production, and therefore fewer breakouts. “Niacinamide reduces sebum or oil production in the skin, which may indirectly help with the appearance of overly enlarged pores. It can also be helpful in mild acne,” says Dr. Mahto.

Finally, niacinamide may be helpful in brightening hyperpigmentation and acne scars in certain skin types, as “studies show it reduces the appearance of hyperpigmented spots in both Asian and Caucasian skin by acting on the steps leading to melanin or pigment production,” adds Dr. Mahto.
